A honeymoon in Sri Lanka lets you combine beach, culture and safari in one trip. Our recommended route takes 10 to 14 days: start in the Cultural Triangle around Sigiriya, head up into the cool tea country, spend two or three nights on a private safari in Yala, then finish with several slow days on a quiet south-coast beach. Most couples choose December to March for this route. If you are marrying in the UK summer, swap the south-coast beaches for the east coast.

The Best Time for a Sri Lanka Honeymoon

• Winter weddings (December to March): The best fit for the classic route. The south and west coasts, the tea country and Sigiriya are all dry and sunny. Book early over Christmas and New Year.
• Spring weddings (April): Still good on the south coast, though April is the hottest month. The east coast is starting its season.
• Summer weddings (June to August): Base your beach time on the east coast around Trincomalee, which is in its dry season, and add the Cultural Triangle. The south coast and tea country can be showery.
• Autumn weddings (October and November): The wettest time of year island-wide. A honeymoon can still work, but plan more spa time and keep the route flexible.

The Classic 14-Day "Safari, Tea and Beach" Honeymoon

This is our most requested itinerary for newlyweds, balancing activity with plenty of downtime.

Days 1–3: The Cultural Triangle

Begin your married life among ancient kingdoms.

• Romantic experience: A sunrise hot-air balloon flight over the jungles and reservoirs around Dambulla. Flights are seasonal, so ask us about dates.
• Stay: Water Gardens Sigiriya, a boutique resort with villas and private plunge pools facing Lion Rock. Climb Sigiriya Rock early in the morning, before the heat and the crowds.

Days 4–6: The Tea Country

Travel up into the cool, misty hills with our Explore the Cold Country route.

• Romantic experience: The scenic Kandy to Ella train ride, followed by a private tea tasting overlooking the valleys.
• Stay: A restored colonial tea bungalow, such as Ceylon Tea Trails, with log fires, afternoon tea and personal butler-style service.

Days 7–9: Safari in Yala

Descend to the dry plains of Yala National Park for a private safari.

Only have 10 days? Drop one night in the Cultural Triangle and one at Yala, and keep at least four nights on the beach at the end.

How to Choose Romantic Places to Stay

The difference between a good trip and a memorable honeymoon is usually where you sleep. When we plan honeymoons, we look for:

• Small properties: Boutique hotels with a few rooms feel private in a way large resorts can't.
• One "wow" stay per region: A plunge-pool villa, a tea bungalow or a tented safari suite, rather than three similar hotels.
• Fewer, longer stops: Two or three nights in each place means less packing and more time together.
• Short final transfer: End within easy reach of the airport, or arrange a private transfer so the last day isn't spent on the road.
